There’s an argument to be made that we simply have too many restaurants in town. But you’d be hard-pressed to choose which ones we could do without. Mestizo’s certainly wasn’t on anyone’s list.
Great location. Husband-and-wife owners who lived and breathed community. The fact is, it’s harder than ever to keep a restaurant afloat these days. Unfortunately, today we bid goodbye to Mestizo’s and thank them for their passion, their food and their contribution to our community.
We also have to say “so long” to the Thunderbird Restaurant on 44th Avenue. After an extensive and impressive remodel, there was so much hope that the Thunderbird would help ignite some new excitement along 44th. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be. Another reminder that a great location, a fresh look and plenty of community enthusiasm don’t always add up to restaurant success.
Now pay attention, because this is going to be fast and furious…
This was not the summer of patios. The heat has been brutal. Even for someone like me who loves hanging out and staring directly into the 100-degree sun, this summer simply didn’t allow for much of that.
I have to wonder about the new version of the food truck lot on 38th, El Arka. It’s at the mercy of the weather and, without a liquor license, faces another challenge. Pushing juice might bring the kids, but probably not their parents.
Esters on 26th, Rolling Smoke on 38th and now Prost Brewing at Clear Creek Crossing have all figured out the magic formula: Have something for the kids, and you’ll have parents ordering drinks, eating and hanging around a whole lot longer.
I’m super impressed with Prost Brewing. The German-themed menu and numerous beverage options are delicious. Prost is one of several eateries opening at Clear Creek Crossing, near the new Lutheran Hospital. Add in a playground, mini amphitheater and much more still to come, and this is quickly becoming a destination. Plenty of parking and plenty of options for everyone.
Little Brazil is finally thriving, and it’s become a regular stop for me. Good portions, friendly prices and friendly service. La Fonda has also become a regular stop. It’s probably the best Mexican food I’ve had in Wheat Ridge.
I’m also happy to hear that the new people taking over the Colorado Plus building are hoping to be open in January. That’s much better than the one-year timeline originally being discussed.
I’d highly recommend attending the Wine Walk on 38th Avenue on September 26 at 2 p.m. It’s a great way to venture into a variety of bars and restaurants along our Main Street while tasting some of your favorite wines. Check out the Wheat Ridge Chamber’s website for tickets.
And finally, after 20 years of breakfasts and lunches at Apple Ridge Cafe at Kipling and 38th — best breakfast in Wheat Ridge, for sure — I finally went there for dinner.
And, of course, I ordered my favorite: liver and onions.
The dinner crowd is definitely different, but the staff is just as friendly and the food is every bit as fantastic.
So, what can we do?
I’m not asking you to eat out every night. But once a week, get out there and show some love to our local restaurant and bar owners — and especially to the people who work for them.
Spread the love. Try a new place. Try new food. Meet some new faces.
These places are part of what makes our community fun, interesting and worth calling home. And sometimes, simply showing up can make a difference.
