The Wheat Ridge Advantage

I’ve spent my entire life involved in Wheat Ridge, and this remarkable city never ceases to amaze me in the best possible ways. As a child, I cherished the moments I got to attend city functions and events with my grandfather, (former Mayor, Hank Stites) where I learned about the rich traditions and wonderful people that shape Wheat Ridge into what it is today. Our city has a deep and proud history, and I’m grateful to be part of it. Currently, we have incredible individuals residing here who are doing significant things, which gives me confidence that Wheat Ridge will continue to be a vibrant place to live for generations to come. I’d like to highlight a few fantastic organizations that contribute to making Wheat Ridge truly wonderful.

The Wheat Ridge Coalition for Education has united some amazing groups, including the Kiwanis, Rotary, Optimist Clubs, the City of Wheat Ridge, Localworks, the Jeffco Action Center, and various private businesses. Their goal is to collaborate with schools to enhance the educational experience for both students and staff. They’ve organized events like the Miracle Shop before Christmas and supported local festivities such as the holiday tree lighting and RidgeFest. Last year, they even launched the TB3 event, which was all about getting kids to have fun while learning, featuring a cool ninja-style obstacle course. I felt honored to join members of this organization last year to distribute “Future Farmers” shirts to the graduating class of 2036.

Wheat Ridge is home to an outstanding educational institution, Wheat Ridge High School, which boasts exceptional programs and dedicated educators. This year, Mr. Chuck Sprague, a long-serving teacher and a pivotal figure in the establishment and guidance of the STEM Engineering program, is set to retire. Mr. Sprague’s contributions have positively impacted numerous community members, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude for his significant role in the Wheat Ridge community.

What has particularly resonated with the community is the importance placed on the future of the STEM program. In response to the concerns of parents, students, and staff, a listening session was organized to ensure that all voices were heard. This collaborative effort aims to assist in identifying the most suitable candidate to support the STEM program’s continued success moving forward.

This year, it is essential to recognize the recipient of the City Council Partnership Award, the Clear Creek Makerspace. In just one year, the Makerspace has significantly contributed to elevating Wheat Ridge’s profile, achieving recognition through numerous local and regional awards. It provides artists, business owners, students, and aspiring entrepreneurs with a valuable space to acquire new skills, utilize state-of-the-art equipment, and collaborate with one another. The Clear Creek Makerspace has proven to be a remarkable addition to our community, fostering innovation and creativity while supporting the growth of individuals and businesses alike.

The Wheat Ridge community is truly one of a kind. Since the recent election, I have received countless messages from residents expressing their happiness to call this place home. While our state and nation grapple with divisions, Wheat Ridge exemplifies unity and collaboration. As we work together to support one another, we are committed to ensuring that the next chapter in our community’s story is the best one yet. This spirit of togetherness and resilience is what makes Wheat Ridge a remarkable place to live and thrive.
