Each summer, Ridgefest brings more than 1,500 Wheat Ridge residents and those from surrounding areas together for an afternoon of live music, local food and beverages, and neighborly connection. Hosted by Localworks, this year’s festival will return Saturday, June 6, from 2 to 8 p.m. at The Green at 38th. At Ridgefest, attendees can expect a full day of live music from local bands, food trucks from favorite neighborhood spots, yard games, children’s activities, Makers on the Ridge, business vendors, a cornhole tournament and, of course, a wide selection of local beer and wine. While there’s plenty of time to plan for the celebration itself, one tradition is already underway that invites the entire community to get involved now: the Ridgefest Button Illustration Contest.
Now in its fourth year, the contest has become a meaningful part of Ridgefest history, and this year it expands with the goal of giving one local artist the opportunity to see their work featured not only on the official festival button, but also on stickers and tote bags. These items will be shared throughout the community as part of the celebration, continuing a tradition of creativity and connection.
Submissions are officially open, and there’s still plenty of time to participate. Artists, doodlers and creative minds of all ages are encouraged to submit their work by Tuesday, April 28. There is no limit on the number of entries. The winner will be chosen based on how well the design reflects this year’s theme: “Wild Wild Wheat Ridge.” This playful, Western-inspired theme invites a wide range of interpretations. Think cowboys, horses and saloons, but creativity is encouraged.
Designs should be created within an 11-inch diameter (or smaller), keeping in mind that the final artwork will be scaled down to fit a 2.25-inch button. Artists are encouraged to use a white background for clarity, and all submissions must be original work. While digital tools are welcome, entries should clearly reflect the artist’s own creativity and not be fully AI-generated.
A panel made up of Sweet Ridge Studios (the contests’ sponsor), Localworks staff and the Ridgefest events committee will review submissions and select a winner based on creativity, originality and how well the design reflects the theme. The winning artist will receive a $250 cash prize, and their work will become part of Ridgefest 2026. The design, and any items featuring it, will not be sold for profit.
Once selected and produced, buttons and other items featuring the design will be available for free at local businesses leading up to the festival, with additional pickup opportunities at the Sweet Ridge Studios and Clear Creek Makerspace booths during Ridgefest. For those looking to be part of something uniquely local, the Ridgefest Illustration Contest offers a chance to contribute to a growing community tradition.
