So Many Teams, So Little Time

This month I attempted to go see as many Farmer teams as possible. That is a tall order for an historic school like Wheat Ridge with so many active sports.

Here we go!

Homecoming Football – The Farmers played the Coal Ridge Titans in a “Ridge vs Ridge” showdown on September 25th.  While the Farmers had flashes of excellence, especially in the run game, they ultimately fell short due to a surprising pass rush from the Titans and a few too many turnovers.

Boys Soccer – The Farmers took to the pitch against the Bear Creek Bears on September 26th. Our boys looked dominant throughout all ninety minutes, and while Senior Drew Miller had some insane saves at goal tender (three to be exact), the Bears defense held as well, and the match ended nil-nil.

Girls Flag Football – The Farmers took on Dakota Ridge under the lights at our turf field on September 29th.  The team ran routes well and showed off some big catches and an interception late in the game.  This is the first ever Flag Football team at Wheat Ridge, and the name of the game this season was progress.  Although the team went winless over the season, they did post their first touchdown and two-point conversion in their last game against Bear Creek.  Well done Farmers!

Boys Tennis – I visited Everett Middle School on October 2nd to see the Farmers tennis team take on Denver North.  While this is a predominantly individual sport, they play with a team mentality at Wheat Ridge, mixing and matching singles and doubles to accommodate the limited team at North. There was real skill on display at our newly refinished blue courts, Jakob Moore showed consistent fore and back swing, with easy power on the serve. Will Mason showed a knack for positioning and precise ball placement. Rowzee Peyton showed excellent foot work and rushed the net with authority. Doubles three players Charlie Mason and Ryhs Rosenow had well placed serves and worked quickly in volley.

Finally, Girls Softball – The Wheat Ridge Farmers Softball team hosted the Pomona Panthers on October 10th at Pennington Fields. It was a Pink out and Little Sister game, with the whole team sporting hot pink uniforms and inviting in the Wheat Ridge 8U Girls Rainbow Racers to stand with them. Junior Haley Cross pitched a stunner with only two hits, zero runs and nine strike outs over five and a third innings.  Senior Evelyn Detwiler and Junior Jaden Collins boasted three hits each. Senior Catcher Olivia Hoppe posted a hit and then had an amazing defensive day with the most plays made for the Farmers at nine.  The Farmers played a clean, confident game and won, 7-0.

As always, if you can, go see a game, match or set.  It is always entertaining!
