There’s finally movement at the Lutheran Legacy Campus.
I had a great conversation this week with Chris Elliott, Principal at EX5. While acknowledging the project is behind schedule, he confirmed that several key structures will remain intact, including the chapel, the blue house, three office buildings, and the hospice.
The City of Wheat Ridge continues negotiations to relocate City Hall from Wadsworth and 29th to a remodeled space on the former hospital site. The projected budget is now hovering above $82 million and includes underground parking for Wheat Ridge Police Department vehicles—estimated at $20,000 to $40,000 per space.
Interestingly, the vacant hospital building has been in high demand by law enforcement agencies for active shooter training exercises. WRPD SWAT, Jefferson County Sheriff, Colorado State Patrol, and even a local horror author have all navigated its dark and empty corridors.
Some delays have stemmed from asbestos discovery and the usual planning and permitting process—both anticipated and, according to Elliott, not unexpected.
Despite the setbacks, the vision remains exciting. While a swimming pool is no longer part of the plan, the project is expected to include splash pads, a tea room in the blue house, retail space, and—my personal favorite—an ice skating rink.
Home construction could begin within a year, though full buildout may take up to a decade. Senior housing, with a range of affordable options, is a key component and will help longtime residents remain in Wheat Ridge. Traffic studies have been completed and are expected to be released soon.
Overall, this remains a strong and promising plan for our community.
Wadsworth Work… Not Again?
While progress along Wadsworth is noticeable, it’s frustrating to see fresh fluorescent markings already appearing on new concrete and asphalt. Let’s hope this doesn’t mean more digging is around the corner.
In the meantime, traffic light timing—especially at 44th and 38th—needs attention. It can take multiple cycles just to make a turn. Until that improves, neighborhood cut-through traffic isn’t going away.
Safety First on 38th Avenue
After a few close calls, Stevens Elementary is working with the city on solutions to improve student safety crossing 38th Avenue.
A simple reminder: slow down, stay alert, and stop when the light is red.
End of an Era: Colorado Plus
Colorado Plus will close its doors on May 31.
King of Wings will take over the space, introducing a new pizza and burger concept that has already seen success at their other locations.
We thank Eugene and the Colorado Plus team for creating a gathering place that meant so much—especially during COVID, when many of us relied on those weekly takeout meals.
In the meantime, continue supporting the many great local restaurants that make Wheat Ridge special.
RidgeFest Is Coming
RidgeFest returns on Saturday, June 6, from 2:00–8:00 PM at The Green on 38th (7101 W 38th Street).
Be sure to stop by the Neighborhood Gazette booth. It’s another great excuse to get off the couch, step outside, and experience everything happening in our city.
Stay tuned for more updates on local development and community news.
