Edgewater’s boards and commissions play a vital role in shaping the city’s future, strengthening community engagement, and ensuring that resident voices guide long-term planning. Two of the most impactful opportunities for civic involvement are the History, Arts, Recreation, and Parks (HARP) Advisory Board and the Planning & Zoning Commission. Each body offers residents the ability to contribute directly to important cultural, recreational, and development decisions that affect the entire community.
Why Join the HARP Advisory Board?
The HARP Advisory Board is composed of seven community members passionate about advancing Edgewater’s cultural identity, recreational opportunities, historical preservation, and park systems. The board’s mission is to plan, advise, and promote long-range programs and events that celebrate Edgewater’s history and creative character in partnership with the city.
HARP’s work is guided by four core pillars:
1. History – Preserving Edgewater’s heritage through protection of historic sites, documents, and artifacts, and supporting public education efforts.
2. Arts – Promoting visual, performing, and literary arts, public art opportunities, and inclusive access to creative experiences.
3. Recreation – Enhancing physical and social well-being through accessible programs and community activities.
4. Parks – Supporting well-maintained, sustainable parks and long-term improvements to public green spaces.
Meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Edgewater Civic Center, with hybrid online options available. Residents who join the HARP Board can expect to collaborate with city staff, evaluate community proposals, and help shape cultural projects that enrich the city for generations.
Why Join the Planning & Zoning Commission?
The Planning & Zoning Commission plays a crucial role in managing the physical development of Edgewater. The Commission prepares and amends the city’s Master Plan, holds initial hearings on subdivision plats and rezoning proposals, and recommends zoning changes to City Council. This Commission is ideal for residents passionate about sustainable growth, land-use policy, architecture, or community planning.
The City of Edgewater regularly invites applications for open seats on the Commission, including current vacancies for interested residents. Application forms are accessible through the city’s website and must be submitted to the City Clerk.
Planning & Zoning meetings take place monthly, typically on Wednesdays, and provide a structured forum where commissioners review development plans, listen to public feedback, and advise on issues that impact housing, business growth, infrastructure, and neighborhood character.
How to Apply
Applications for both boards are submitted through Edgewater’s Boards & Commissions portal. Applicants must download and email the completed form to the City Clerk.
