Restaurant Roundup: Changes, Closures,
and Local Favorites

It’s been a turbulent stretch for restaurants across our community—openings, transitions, and a few uncertain paths forward. Through it all, one thing remains clear: supporting local matters more than ever.

If you’re looking for a standout experience, make your way to Himalayan Spice on Tennyson. It’s exceptional. The flavors are bold yet balanced, the spices layered beautifully, and the service consistently on point. The patio is perfect for a relaxed happy hour, but stepping inside for dinner immerses you in the full sensory experience—aromas, warmth, and a menu that delivers every time.

On the other end of the spectrum, we prepare to say goodbye to a longtime favorite. Colorado Plus will close its doors on May 31st. Before it does, take a moment to stop in, grab a burger and a beer, and thank Eugene for what he built. During COVID, it was more than a restaurant—it was a reliable staple for so many of us. From craft brews to creative menu items (yes, even Korean dishes), it carved out a unique place in our town. The space will soon transition to a new concept from King of Wings, featuring burgers and pizza.

Then there’s Rolling Smoke, now in the former Right Coast Pizza location. It’s a puzzling one. The BBQ is undeniably excellent—we’ve seen firsthand how quickly they can sell out, especially during their pop-up at Clancy’s parking lot. Yet the physical location often feels closed, with chairs stacked and lights dimmed. It’s a prime corner on 38th, with a great patio and real potential. The hope here is simple: more consistency, more visibility, and leadership that matches the quality of the food.

Summer, of course, brings us back to Mestizos. This is their season. The patio comes alive, the drinks are cold, and the atmosphere is as welcoming as ever. Whether you’re biking over, walking the neighborhood, or pushing a stroller, Mestizos remains a go-to gathering spot. Margaritas are the standard, but consider switching it up this summer—go with a Paloma.

Over on 29th, anticipation continues to build. The construction looks nearly complete, and the concept—a grilled cheese-focused spot—has plenty of intrigue. It seemed like a perfect fit for Linda and Jim, but updates have been limited. With multiple terraces and inviting outdoor spaces, it feels like a place that could thrive. Hopefully, doors open soon and we see it come to life this summer.

Meanwhile, Wheat Ridge Lanes continues to quietly deliver. The Country Club atmosphere, friendly bartenders, strong happy hour, and the every-other-Thursday steak night keep the community coming back. Add in one of the best patios in town, and it’s easy to see why it remains a staple.

And for those willing to think outside the box: the best breakfast in town might just be at the Lutheran Hospital cafeteria. No joke. It’s affordable, fresh, and consistently good. If you miss breakfast, the salad and soup bar are just as solid. It may not be the usual destination, but it’s worth it.
