There is something about this small Mexican brewery on 38th and Pierce. Attracting a community of beer connoisseurs and lovers of street tacos. The beer is brewed right there with a cycle (depending on the beer) of 6 weeks. I’m not a “beer person” but their Mexican larger is delicious. It’s like going to the Coors tour (the short one) and getting to taste the freshest of the freshly brewed beer. Except that here you also get amazing street tacos. Small hand held, in a soft shell filed with multiple options of beef, chicken and pork. Amazing!
It’s no secret that bars and restaurants aren’t thriving right now and It’s no different for Mestizos. It’s not so much about sales and marketing and filling up seats. It’s more about the high cost of operating a food and staffing business. People will only pay so much for a beer or a meal. But at Mesito’s I always feel like they’ve been waiting for me. Like choosing to spend an hour in their place is so appreciated. The attention and gratitude is well felt.
Most of their customers live just around the corner and love being able to simply walk over and of course walk home. But there are always a fair bit of cars in their lot. Joe Demotte and I spent an afternoon imagining what it would take to shake this place up and get it filled with people. Maybe replace the parking spaces up front with a tables and chairs with umbrellas. Simple but effective.

It’s really at Mestizo’s where my love for the Paloma cocktail came to life. It’s the perfect alternative to the traditional and maybe sometimes too citrusy margarita. I usually stop by on Fridays. First one to see me and mention this article, your Paloma is on me.
I guess the key for most when deciding where to go is will they get their money’s worth, will they get good service and obviously a good product. It’s the day old decision between best food and best service. Would you continue going to a bar or restaurant if the food was mediocre but the service was exceptional? Or more like crappy service but OMG, it’s the best food in the world. I’m on the fence about that one, how about you?
