Help Keep Anderson Pool Afloat!

Anderson Pool is more than just a place to swim in the City of Wheat Ridge. Since 1979, it’s been a community hub where families gather, kids learn to swim, and friends meet up to enjoy the outdoors during the summer weather. The community pool welcomes an average of 25,000 visitors each year. In 2008, improvements were made to the pool. The slide and slide tower were demolished and rebuilt, the family pool was constructed and doweled onto the original pool, and a cement deck was added between the family and lap pools. Additionally, small shade sails were installed, modifications were made in the pump room, and the lap pool’s west wall was replaced. Despite the facelift, Anderson Pool and the foundation it’s built on remains mostly original to its 1979 construction – and its aging infrastructure is nearing the end of its functional life.

There currently are no immediate safety concerns, but a 2023 assessment revealed over $1.1 million in short-term investments needed to maintain safe operations. This figure does not include recurring maintenance or long-term costs, which will be higher. Therefore, significant investment and repairs are needed to maintain the pool, but these challenges will continue to grow without a major overhaul.

Within the next 3-5 years, the pool will need to be closed indefinitely or replaced at an estimated cost of $12M-$16M. In 2025, Wheat Ridge Parks and Recreation staff are asking the community 1) whether or not they support replacing the outdoor pool and 2) if they want to see the pool replaced and continue to be available to the community, what amenities would they like to see included in the design for the new pool.

As we look toward the future, the time has come for us to reflect on the future of our beloved outdoor pool. Parks and Recreation Director, Karen A. O’Donnell, believes that “the Anderson Pool replacement is a vital investment in the future of our community, and now is the time for residents to help shape it. This project is about more than just a new pool—it’s about creating a space that brings people together, promotes health and wellness, and reflects the needs and desires of Wheat Ridge families. We encourage the community to get involved, share their input, and be part of shaping a facility that will serve generations to come.”

How to Share Your Thoughts:

We’ve created a short survey to gather your feedback. The survey takes only a few minutes to complete and will guide our next steps in the planning process. Your feedback is essential in helping the Department make informed decisions that will benefit the entire community.

The community survey is now open and available via the WhatsUpWheatRidge website https://whatsupwheatridge.com/anderson-pool. We encourage everyone to participate—whether you’re a frequent swimmer, a parent with young children, or someone who enjoys the social aspect of the pool, your opinion is important!
