The food scene in Wheat Ridge continues to evolve, bringing both challenges and triumphs to our beloved local establishments. One thing is certain: there is no shortage of passion, dedication, and flavor in this community. As we navigate the highs and lows of the restaurant industry, we want to take a moment to highlight some key players, exciting developments, and a few spots that are must-visits for any food lover.

Colorado Plus Brew pub: A Must-Visit for cold beer and great food

If you haven’t yet been to Colorado Plus Brew Pub, Saint Patrick’s Day festival proved to be a high point for them. The star of the show? Their incredible seven-day brine-soaked corned beef and cabbage. Eugene, the mastermind behind the brewery, has made a conscious effort to return to the roots of what made this spot a success in the first place. And it’s working. Seeing the bar and tables filled once again is a true testament to the quality of their food, brews, and atmosphere. This is absolutely a place you’ll want to visit again for the first time.

Community Support Keeps Little Brazil Thriving

Another highlight of the local food scene is Little Brazil, which has gained momentum thanks to a strong community-driven fundraiser. It’s heartwarming to see Wheat Ridge rally around this beloved restaurant during tough times, proving once again that our town deeply values the businesses that bring us together over a good meal.

New and Reborn Eateries in Town

Rolling Smoke BBQ has opened in the former home of Right Coast Pizza. This long-anticipated barbecue joint has a loyal following and is becoming a favorite among locals. We’d love to hear from our readers—what are your thoughts on this new addition?

Meanwhile, GasTown is seeing a resurgence. With construction wrapping up and a second attempt at securing their liquor license, we’re hopeful that this time, they’ll be able to establish themselves as a staple in Wheat Ridge’s social scene.

The Closing of Hacienda and the Uncertain Future of Benzina

Not all the news is positive. Unfortunately, Hacienda Restaurant closed its doors in early March, reportedly due to leasing issues. It was a favorite spot for many, including myself, where I enjoyed a perfect happy hour margarita.

Benzina, another cherished Denver restaurant, recently announced its imminent closure. However, there’s a glimmer of hope. While their operations will be scaled back to a smaller, less labor-intensive menu, owner Brad remains optimistic. If anyone can pivot and find a way forward, it’s him.

The Harsh Realities of Running a Restaurant

It’s no secret that the restaurant industry is facing mounting challenges. The cost of food, labor, rent, and taxes continues to rise, making it incredibly difficult for even the most popular spots to stay afloat. Having a packed house every night simply isn’t enough anymore. Community involvement, innovative cost-cutting strategies, and a bit of luck are all necessary for survival in today’s market.

Celebrating Local Gems

Despite the hardships, there are still so many incredible places to celebrate. Mestizo Brew Cantina remains a strong, independent force in the local food scene. Tad’s spot at Stylus and Crate always provides a welcoming atmosphere. Wolf & Wildflower, ruBy dedicated Wheat Ridge locals, is actively finding ways to reduce operating costs while maintaining their high-quality offerings.

Discovering New Favorites

There are still so many restaurants and bars in Wheat Ridge that I have yet to visit, and I’m committing to trying one new place per week. First on my list? La Fonda Mexican Restaurant for sure. I’m also super excited about trying out the new place on Tennyson, Himalayan Spice. Their pet friendly patio will be perfect as I test out my tolerance for the tasty spices. And who’s joining me at Rockette Tavern?

As we continue to explore and support our local food scene, we’d love to hear from you. What are your favorite spots? Which new openings are you most excited about? Let’s keep the conversation—and the dining—going strong in Wheat Ridge.
