As kids head back to school, many pets go from a busy house all summer to several hours of quiet during the day. For most healthy pets, this is a normal adjustment—but a little preparation can make the transition easier.
Is Sleeping All Day Normal?
Yes! Dogs and cats naturally spend a lot of time sleeping and resting. If your pet is eating normally, interested in walks or play, and acting like themselves when you are home, a quiet day of napping is generally nothing to worry about.
However, a sudden change in energy or behavior, especially along with changes in appetite, thirst, mobility or bathroom habits should be discussed with your veterinarian.
Keep Them Safe & Engaged
Before everyone heads out the door, make sure your pet has:
Fresh water and a comfortable, safe place to rest
Age-appropriate toys or food puzzles
A chance to exercise and go to the bathroom
A predictable daily routine
Safe access to their favorite spaces
You can also leave the TV or radio on if your pet seems to enjoy background noise, but it isn’t necessary for every animal.
Does My Pet Need a Dog Walker?
It depends! Puppies, seniors, high-energy dogs and pets with medical needs may benefit from a midday visit. Other healthy adult dogs may be perfectly happy sleeping and relaxing until the family gets home.
Cats typically don’t need a midday visit, but active or social cats may appreciate a play session or extra enrichment.
Every Pet Is Different
There is no one-size-fits-all schedule. Your pet’s age, breed, personality, health and energy level all influence how much exercise, interaction and enrichment they need.
The biggest goal is consistency. Start adjusting your pet’s routine before school begins, provide plenty of exercise and attention when you are home, and give them a safe, comfortable environment while you’re away.
A quiet house doesn’t have to mean a bored pet. For many animals, a peaceful afternoon of napping is exactly what they need. Should you need anything or have any concerns with your pets, Berkeley Animal Hospital is here to support you.
