Each year, the Neighborhood Gazette proudly awards the Lou Olivera Citizenship Scholarship, honoring the life and legacy of Louis ‘Lou’ Olivera -U.S. Army Ranger, devoted community member, and proud American. Lou believed that citizenship is not just a status, but a responsibility- lived through service, integrity, and compassion. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a local high school student who best expresses what being a United States citizen means to them. Eligible students from Wheat Ridge, Edgewater, and Mountain View are invited to submit an essay (approximately 1,200 words) reflecting on their own experience or the story of someone who exemplifies true citizenship.
It is with great pleasure that we announce the winner of the Neighborhood Gazette’s Lou Olivera Citizenship Scholarship.
Congratulations to Isabella Urban, a Wheat Ridge resident and member of Lakewood High School’s Class of 2026, for earning this year’s $1,000 Lou Olivera Citizenship Scholarship.
A senior in Lakewood High School’s prestigious International Baccalaureate Program, Isabella will attend college this fall to pursue a degree in Healthcare Administration, where she hopes to build a career serving others and improving access to quality healthcare.
Her winning essay explored the meaning of citizenship through the stories of her own family—from Huguenot colonists and Polish immigrants to Mexican-American relatives “who never crossed a border but had one cross them.” Her thoughtful essay reminded us that citizenship is not simply a legal status but a lifelong commitment to community, responsibility, and service.
Those values reflect the legacy of Lou Olivera, who believed that being a good citizen meant caring for your neighbors, giving back to your community, and making a positive difference every day. The scholarship was established to honor Lou’s life by recognizing young people who demonstrate those same ideals.
We also want to thank every student who submitted an essay. Your stories were inspiring and gave us great confidence in the future of our community.
Congratulations once again to Isabella Urban. We are proud to recognize her achievements and wish her every success as she begins this exciting new chapter. We know she will make both Wheat Ridge and the Lou Olivera legacy proud.
