An Interview with Mountain View’s Police Chief Nesbitt

As part of our October focus on safety, we asked Chief Michael Nesbitt to share a little bit about himself. His answers reveal not only his dedication to law enforcement, but also his belief in the everyday connections that make our community stronger.

What first inspired you to go into law enforcement?

A big part of my inspiration came from seeing the positive impact officers can have on the community—not just in emergencies, but in everyday interactions. Whether it’s lending a hand, listening to someone’s concerns, or being a steady presence during a difficult moment, those small actions can make a big difference.

Can you share a moment when a resident’s kindness or actions really made your day?

There have been many moments of kindness, but one that stands out is during Police Appreciation Month when residents decorated with blue ribbons. Driving through town and seeing that show of support was uplifting, it reminded me why I love serving this community.

If you weren’t a police officer, what other career would you have chosen?

This career has been so incredibly satisfying I really can’t picture myself doing anything else, but I think I would have chosen a career that still allowed me to serve and connect with people, something like teaching or coaching. Both roles give you the opportunity to guide others, make a positive impact, and see the results of your efforts in someone else’s growth.

What’s your favorite way to unwind when you’re not working?

I love spending time with my classic cars. I’ve always been a car enthusiast, and working on them—seeing the progress come together—helps me clear my head and recharge. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends; just being around them is a great way to relax and set work aside.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received on the job?

Be the same person in and out of uniform. It’s a reminder that integrity, consistency, and authenticity matter most, no matter what the situation.

Do you have a favorite police-themed movie or TV show—and how accurate is it?

I’m probably dating myself but one of my favorite police-themed shows is The Andy Griffith Show. While it’s much more lighthearted and simplified than real police work, I appreciate how it highlights community relationships and the importance of integrity—values that are just as important today as they were then.

Who (or what) makes you laugh?

What makes me laugh most is being able to laugh at myself. I think it’s important to not take life too seriously and to find humor in everyday situations, even when things don’t go perfectly.

If you could give one safety tip that everyone in town remembered, what would it be?

Call the police if you see or hear something suspicious. Community awareness and timely reporting can prevent incidents and keep everyone safer. Always remember that we are here to help in any way we can.
