Happy New Year!
You may have seen and heard mention of 2026 being the 250th birthday of the United States and the 150th anniversary of Colorado becoming a state. It’s also the 125th anniversary of Edgewater! In 1901, Edgewater residents voted to incorporate as a city (the state officially recognized it three years later).
There are official terms for these special anniversaries. Edgewater’s 125th anniversary is a quasquicentennial; the 150th of Colorado is a sesquicentennial, and our nation’s 250th is a semi quincentennial. I choose to call them something much simpler: A year long celebration!
“AMERICA 250” is planning events commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776. The “America 250 – Colorado 150 Commission” was established to guide Colorado’s twin commemorations in ways that enable all Coloradans to participate. You’ll hear about many events in Colorado and throughout the country this year commemorating this special year.
In Edgewater, we’ll also be celebrating our history and looking toward the future! Throughout the year, recognition of Edgewater’s past will be included in city events. This will include at City Council meetings and at some of our Friday morning coffees. Throughout the year, we’ll honor some of the special dates and anniversaries in Edgewater history, including recognizing some of the businesses that have been a part of our history.
Later this year, I’ll present a program on the history of radio in Edgewater. Commercial radio was a big part of Edgewater for many decades! If you listen to KYGO, it was born in Edgewater. The Beatles were presented at Red Rocks by an Edgewater radio station (95 KIMN), and many celebrities came through the city.
Hopefully, we can have a fun celebrating Edgewater, the state of Colorado and the United States this year recognizing 125/150/250! If you have any ideas, let us know!

I wanted to recognize John Thomsen for his service on the Edgewater City Council the past two years. He opted not to run for re-election in November. John did a fantastic job on City Council. He was true to the non-partisan nature of city service, and asked great questions helping Council make wise decisions.
We honored John at our December 16 meeting, which was also when we swore in newly re-elected members Hannah Gay Keo, Joel Newton and Lilly Steirer. We also welcomed new council member Mark Steckschulte. I was also sworn in for my second term as Edgewater Mayor.
Once again, Happy New Year!
