This fall, the Wheat Ridge High School theatre program, with a production team of over 40 students, dazzled audiences with a spectacular production of a new play, Andie Fowler’s Big-Time Bucket List. The cast and crew of the play came together to present a performance that showcased their dedication, talent, and hard work. The show was a resounding success, drawing large crowds for each performance and receiving glowing reviews from both the school community and local theater enthusiasts. The students’ commitment to bringing the story to life was evident in every aspect of the production — from the set, sound, and lighting designs to the nuanced performances on stage. Best of all, the production was the first time this play had ever been produced and the cast and crew were fortunate enough to have a one-on-one web chat with the playwright, Jeremy Desmond. This was an incredible opportunity for the students to engage with the full process of production, from story creation to execution, and allowed students to be able to ask questions about the show prior to opening night.

The play not only provided an opportunity for students to shine, but also served as a testament to the revitalization of the school’s theatre program. After a few years of budget cuts the return of formal theatre classes has reignited interest in performing arts. The recent success of the fall play is a clear sign that the program is back and stronger than ever, with students eager to embrace new challenges and creative opportunities.

But the excitement doesn’t end there! As the curtains fall on the fall play, the theatre department is gearing up for an even more thrilling production in the spring. Anastasia, the captivating musical based on the 1997 animated film, is set to take the stage. The timeless tale of mystery and adventure, set against the backdrop of post-revolutionary Russia, promises to be a showstopper. With its rich musical score, dazzling choreography, and an ensemble cast that is ready to shine, Anastasia is sure to capture the hearts of audiences young and old.

“This is a dream show for so many of our students,” says WRHS Choir Director, Ryan Plakorus. “Anastasia offers a beautiful story that requires both vocal and dramatic depth. Incorporating the entire WRHS Fine Arts Department (Band, Choir, and Theatre), we’ve got some incredible talent in this school, and I can’t wait for the community to see what these students are capable of.”

The success of the fall play proved that the high school theatre department is better than ever—and with Anastasia on the horizon, the best is yet to come. Be sure to mark your calendars and prepare for an unforgettable night!
