For over half a century, the students of Fairmount Elementary and the residents of Mountain Vista Senior Living have come together each holiday season to celebrate the joy of giving, community, and lasting friendships. This year marked the 55th anniversary of their heartwarming holiday tradition.

In 1969, Fairmount Elementary and Mountain Vista Senior Living began a unique partnership to foster intergenerational connections and shared holiday joy. What began as a small gathering has grown into a cherished tradition that unites generations of students, families, teachers, and residents.

The PTA plays a key role in organizing this festive event, with families volunteering to fulfill the Christmas wish lists of Mountain Vista’s seniors. Each resident receives a special gift, handpicked by the families of Fairmount students. This generosity is celebrated during an organized Christmas party where students of all residents come together to share in the joy. The concert, a centerpiece of the weeklong events, is coordinated by Laura Hirn, Fairmount’s music teacher and choir director, who ensures the music fills the air with holiday cheer.

“Seeing the joy in these children’s faces reminds me of the real magic of Christmas,” said Mrs. Johnson, a resident at Mountain Vista. For both the children and the seniors, the annual gathering offers more than just festive cheer; it strengthens bonds across generations, building a shared sense of community and family.

“For us, it’s not just about the holidays; it’s about seeing these young people grow and knowing they are carrying forward the legacy of kindness,” shared Audra Ramirez, Mountain Vista Activities Director. “The residents look forward to it every year.”

This tradition continues with the help of many dedicated individuals, including Sally Mills and Chris Kruse from Fairmount Administration, Chas Heaviland, a 5th grade Teacher and member of the Kindness Crew, Corrie Turgeon and Michelle Henriksen, PTA coordinators, and Audra Ramirez , Mountain Vista’s Activities Director.

As Fairmount Elementary and Mountain Vista Senior Living look toward the next 55 years, both communities remain committed to nurturing this special bond that enriches the lives of everyone involved. Plans for next year’s celebration are already underway!
