A Season of Thanks: Preparing Mountain View for Winter

As November arrives and the leaves finish falling, the days grow shorter, temperatures begin to drop, and our community starts preparing for the winter season ahead. November is also a time to pause, reflect, and appreciate the people and places that make Mountain View such a special community. With Thanksgiving approaching, it is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the importance of community spirit, neighborly kindness, and working together to keep our town a safe, welcoming place to live.

Celebrating the People Who Make Mountain View Special

A strong community is built on more than its streets, buildings, and public spaces. It is built by the people who live, work, and spend time here. From residents who take pride in their properties to neighbors who lend a helping hand, small everyday actions contribute to the character and quality of life we enjoy in Mountain View.

As we reflect on the year, we want to thank our residents for their continued involvement, patience, and support. We also recognize the Town employees and public servants who work throughout the year to maintain municipal services, care for public infrastructure, respond to community needs, and help keep Town operations running smoothly. Much of this work takes place behind the scenes, but it plays an important role in maintaining the community we all share.

Whether you attend a public meeting, share feedback with Town staff, help a neighbor, or simply do your part to keep our community clean and safe, your contributions make a difference. Community pride is demonstrated in many ways, and every effort helps make Mountain View a better place for everyone.

Preparing for Colorado’s Winter Weather

Colorado weather is famously unpredictable. A mild autumn afternoon can quickly turn into a snowy, icy evening, making November an ideal time to prepare your home, vehicle, and property for winter conditions. Taking a few precautions now can help prevent problems later and make the season safer and more comfortable for everyone.

Residents are encouraged to check their home heating systems, replace furnace filters as needed, seal drafts around doors and windows, and protect outdoor plumbing from freezing temperatures. Disconnecting garden hoses and checking exterior faucets before the first hard freeze can help prevent costly damage. It is also a good time to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and make sure emergency supplies are available.

Winter driving preparation is equally important. Check your tires, windshield wipers, headlights, battery, and windshield washer fluid. Keeping a small emergency kit in your vehicle with warm clothing, a flashlight, water, and basic supplies can be helpful if you experience delays during winter weather. When snow or ice is in the forecast, allow extra travel time, increase your following distance, and remember that bridges, intersections, and shaded areas can become slippery before other road surfaces.

** Keeping Sidewalks Safe and Accessible**

One of the simplest ways residents can help prepare Mountain View for winter is by keeping sidewalks adjoining their properties clear of snow and ice. Safe sidewalks are important for everyone, including children walking to school, people commuting to work, older adults, and residents who use mobility aids or strollers.

Please make a plan for snow removal before the first major storm arrives. If you are traveling or unable to shovel your sidewalk, consider asking a neighbor, friend, or family member for assistance. When clearing snow, avoid pushing it into the street, where it can create additional hazards for drivers and interfere with snow removal efforts.

A little preparation and cooperation can make a significant difference in keeping our sidewalks accessible and our neighborhoods safer throughout the winter months.

If you have any questions about winter code enforcement regulations, we encourage residents to call Town Hall and speak to our new Public Works Director, Jim Greer. He is a wealth of knowledge and a great resource for residents.

The Importance of Looking Out for One Another

As temperatures fall, some residents may need a little extra help navigating the season. Older adults, individuals with mobility challenges, and neighbors who live alone may appreciate a simple check-in during a cold spell or after a heavy snowfall.

Consider offering to shovel a sidewalk, pick up groceries, or check whether someone has the supplies they need. These small gestures may seem simple, but they reflect the kindness and consideration that strengthen a community. Winter can be demanding, and knowing that neighbors care about one another can make a meaningful difference.

Stay Connected with the Town

As we move into the winter season, residents are encouraged to stay informed about Town news, public meetings, municipal services, and community announcements. Visit the Town of Mountain View’s website at www.tomv.org or contact Town Hall at 303-421-7282 for information and assistance.

The Town appreciates the opportunity to serve our residents and remains committed to supporting a safe, connected, and thriving community. We encourage everyone to stay engaged, share questions or concerns, and continue taking pride in the place we call home.

From all of us at the Town of Mountain View, thank you for being part of our community. As we gather with family and friends this Thanksgiving, we hope you find time to reflect on the good things in life, enjoy the company of those around you, and extend a little kindness to someone who may need it. One simple act of kindness can impact the life of another for many days to come.

Wishing everyone in Mountain View a safe, warm, and happy Thanksgiving!
