Cold Noses and Frosty Toes: Winter Warnings for Your Dog

Winter may turn your neighborhood into a snow globe, but for dogs, it’s not all snow angels and belly flops into powdery drifts. While you’re sipping cocoa and posting cute “pup in a sweater” pics, your four-legged friend faces a few chilly challenges worth sniffing out.

First off, ice is not a chew toy. Slippery sidewalks can send even the most graceful greyhound into an accidental triple axel. And while salt and de-icing chemicals help you stay upright, they can burn paws faster than you can say “walkies.” A quick paw rinse after walks keeps those pads happy (and your rugs salt-free).

Next, remember that fashion matters. Some dogs are built for snow (hello, Huskies), but others—looking at you, Chihuahuas—shiver like drama queens in a breeze. A warm jacket isn’t just cute; it’s canine armor against the cold.

Also, beware of frozen water bowls—no dog wants to lick ice when they’re just trying to hydrate. And while the scent of antifreeze might seem irresistible, it’s dangerously toxic. Keep it locked away like a secret stash of bacon treats.

Finally, when your pup looks at you with those “but it’s snowing!” eyes, remind them that frostbite and hypothermia are real, not just plot twists in Homeward Bound 3.

With a little care (and maybe a few extra snuggles), your dog can enjoy winter safely—and still look fabulous doing it.
