For Alan Lee, a retired Senior VP of US Bank, Navy veteran, businessman, and artist, life has always been about resilience and growth. His journey at Mountain Vista Senior Living Community reflects these values—one of overcoming obstacles, embracing change, and finding purpose even in the most challenging times.
Alan’s path to Mountain Vista began when his health began to decline, and he was facing an uncertain future. “It was a scary time,” he recalls. “I needed someone to help me through this, to give me the support I wasn’t sure I could find on my own.” Little did he know this would be the beginning of a transformative experience, not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. The community and professionals at Mountain Vista surrounded him with the kindness and support he had always been known to give to others. “The people here went above and beyond,” Alan says. “It’s the kind of support you don’t often think about, but it made all the difference for me.”
Alan’s life had been defined by leadership and service—skills he brought with him when he entered Mountain Vista. From his time as an editorial cartoonist for the Vallejo Times Herald in California, to his role as a Senior VP at US Bank, and his experience as a Navy veteran, Alan had built a rich and multifaceted career. He always has been someone who found ways to get through any obstacle. That same spirit of resilience guided him as he moved through various levels of care at Mountain Vista—Assisted Living, Rehab, and Skilled Nursing. “Each stage gave me the chance to grow in different ways, based on what I needed at the time,” he says. “The ability to move through each phase with the right support was key to my recovery.”
But Alan’s story is more than just one of personal healing. It’s also a story of leadership and community. When he was elected President of the Resident Council, he saw it as an opportunity to bring people together, just as he had done throughout his life. “I wanted to draw people back to the feeling of closeness and happiness—whether it’s as friends, family, or neighbors,” he explains. “It’s about creating connections and helping people feel heard.” Alan’s experience is rooted in his belief in the power of community and open communication. “We need to sit down, understand one another, and form meaningful relationships,” he says. “That’s how we grow together. It’s what makes us stronger.” Through all his roles, Alan has always been someone who believes in the importance of connection. “It’s not just about getting better,” he says. “It’s about continuing to contribute and stay active. I want to be able to give back and be a part of something bigger.” His commitment to this goal kept him motivated throughout his recovery, and it’s a testament to the determination that has defined his life.
As his time at Mountain Vista draws to a close, Alan has a message for others who may be beginning their own journey in senior living: “Open your mind and your heart,” he advises. “No matter what stage you’re at, continue to grow.” Alan’s time at Mountain Vista has been a period of profound growth—both for him, his lovely wife Beth, and the community around him. His journey is a reminder that, no matter where we are in life, we can continue to evolve, learn, and find new ways to contribute. Alan reflects. “This isn’t the end of your life—it’s a new chapter. Embrace it and be open to all the possibilities that come your way.”
From his Navy days to his banking career and now as a beloved leader at Mountain Vista, Alan’s story is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit. With each step, he has faced obstacles head-on, built meaningful connections, and continued to inspire those around him. As he prepares to return home, he knows that the strength he gained here will stay with him—and that, in his own way, he will continue to make a difference in the world.
