Did you know that each year, over 1500 people in the Denver metro area end up taking a trip to the emergency room due to slips and falls on icy sidewalks? That’s right folks, it’s more than your pride that potentially gets bruised when you go down like a wet sack of potatoes on an icy sidewalk. If you’re lucky it could be just your tailbone, but sometimes it’s an arm, leg, or skull that gets cracked. As we head into this winter’s snow season, let’s all work together to minimize injuries here in town.
In our charming Town of Mountain View, the local code on snow removal is crystal clear. You might say it is like ice. The existence of snow or ice on sidewalks has been declared to be a public nuisance. So, if you’re planning to just let Mother Nature handle it, you might want to think again!
Section 11.02.010 of the Town Code lays it out plainly. The owner, tenant, or occupant of any building or lot is required to deal with snow and ice within 24 hours after the snow stops falling. This includes shoveling to clear the full width of the sidewalk, and any ramps at the corners. No shortcuts here, folks!
If the snow or ice hardens down to where it can’t be shoveled to clear the sidewalk, sand or ice melt needs to be spread over the area to assure firm footing so that the area can be safely traveled. Once the weather permits, you need to clear the sidewalk thoroughly.
Should you elect not to clear the sidewalk, the Town can clear the nuisance at the owner’s expense. So, if you prefer not to get a surprise bill in the mail, please stay on top of your sidewalk clearing.
But remember, this isn’t really about avoiding fines; this is about being a good neighbor, having community spirit, and above all else… Safety! Besides, who doesn’t want to get a good workout shoveling snow? Just think of it as a membership to nature’s gym.
So, grab your shovels, sprinkle that sand, and let’s keep the Town of Mountain View safe and slip-free this winter. Our neighbors (and our tailbones) will be eternally grateful!
