As of August 7, motorcyclists in Colorado can legally pass between vehicles stopped on the roadway that are traveling in the same direction as the rider under specific circumstances.
It’s known as lane filtering, but there are conditions a rider needs to have in place before they can move ahead and pass vehicles in stopped traffic.
Riders need to pass on the left of the vehicle in front of them, if other vehicles are stopped in traffic in the same direction or are stopped for a red light. The lane needs to be wide enough to pass safely, and the motorcycle can not exceed 15 miles per hour when passing. When stopped vehicles start moving again, the motorcyclist has to stop passing.
A motorcycle rider may not overtake or pass along the right shoulder or by crossing over the center line into oncoming traffic.
Lane filtering is not the same as lane splitting. Lane splitting, or riding between lanes of moving vehicles, is still against the law in Colorado.
