Wheat Ridge Historical Society Member Appreciation Day
Save Saturday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a Potluck Picnic at the Historical Park, 4610 Robb St. The Society wants to honor all its members, community leaders and residents who have supported us through our Re-imagination Project and other on-going activities.
We’ll provide the main dishes of hot dogs and hamburgers from the grill with buns and all the fixin’s, as well as some of the best desserts you’ve ever tasted! In observance of our sustainability program, we ask that you bring your own place settings and a favorite side dish to share (for eight). We will have some picnic basket sets available for a nominal fee if you forget your place setting.
Do not miss this chance to learn about different local clubs and organizations; representatives will be there to provide information. Also, learn about the Historical Society’s volunteer options and programs. All park museums will be open and free for the day.

Jeffco Approves New School Budget
The Jefferson County Board of Education adopted and appropriated a budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year on June 13. The budget anticipates an excess of funds and includes compensation increases for Jeffco employees to keep the county competitive in hiring teachers and other staff. Staff salaries currently account for 87% of the budget.
The district has approximately $126 million in unassigned fund balance after budgeting for FY25, which will be used to cover potential spending in the following year. However, projections show that at the conclusion of FY26, if the district does not reduce expenses, it will drop below the Board and district’s target range for unassigned reserves aligned with the Government Finance Officers Association guidelines of 8% to 12% for total operating budget. For Jeffco, this equates to a $90 to $120 million fund balance. In the coming year, the Board will discuss ways to reduce spending and adjust the district’s projections for unassigned reserves.
Edgewater Collective Offers Free Family Meal Kits
Edgewater Collective, Kaizen and the Jeffco Reads Family Program are offering free meal kits to families every Friday starting at 12 p.m. until supplies run out. Meal kits can be picked up at Edgewater Elementary, 5570 w. 24th Avenue.
The Jefferson Center Launches Summer Wellness Series
As part of its community investments funded by the American Rescue Plan, Wheat Ridge and the Jefferson Center for Mental Health are launching a new mental health and wellness series focused on movement, meditation and time in nature.
Events in the series take place at Prospect Park and are open to all ages. Registration is required on the event page. July’s offering is a mindful walk in nature led by Chelsea Vibert and Charles Floyd. It aims to help participants slow down and ground themselves by walking mindfully through the park. It will include calming strategies like a full body scan, taking note of surroundings, and focusing on the power nature can have on the mind.
August will feature a meditation in the park led by Rebecca Mitchell who will guide participants through a meditation under a grove of trees at Prospect Park. This meditation may involve deep breathing exercises, body scans, and mindfulness techniques to anchor the mind in the present moment.
