The question I’ve heard more than any other over the past few months has been, “Is Rolling Smoke BBQ open?”
The second most common comment? “The food is amazing.”
It was time to find out for myself.
Located at 7100 W. 38th Ave., in the heart of Wheat Ridge, Rolling Smoke BBQ occupies the former Right Coast Pizza location. After purchasing the building, ownership spent nearly two years transforming the space before reopening with an entirely new concept.
I sat down with owner Terry Walsh and managing partner Andrew Clapp, and one thing became obvious within minutes: their enthusiasm is contagious. They love barbecue, they love the community, and they’re excited about what’s ahead.
Unlike many neighborhood restaurants, Rolling Smoke is open seven days a week, making it an easy choice whether you’re planning lunch, dinner, or takeout. In fact, about 25 percent of their business is to-go orders, proving their slow-smoked barbecue travels just as well as it tastes in the restaurant.
While the brisket, ribs, and smoked meats are what built their reputation, the menu also offers surprises. Delicious portobello mushrooms, along with vegetarian and vegan options, ensure that everyone in the family can find something they’ll enjoy.
Summer is shaping up to be busy. Live music is on the calendar, Tuesday nights will become Kids’ Night, and the team continues to support local organizations, including the Wheat Ridge High School football program.
Terry and Andrew understand why some people have wondered if they’re open. The building can appear dark from the street, especially in the evenings, so plans are already underway to open the front garage door during business hours and add more visible signage to let customers know they’re open and ready to serve.
Their kitchen also supports the Rolling Smoke location at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, feeding concertgoers throughout the season. And if you attended Clancy’s three-day St. Patrick’s Day celebration this year, chances are you saw their food truck—where they sold out every single day.
After my visit, I can finally answer the neighborhood’s biggest question.
Yes, they’re open.
And yes…the food really is that good.
Rolling Smoke BBQ has officially earned a place on my Friday Happy Hour list.
Who’s joining me?
